Archive for August, 2011

I had been looking forward to this day. For the longest time we planned to volunteer for something. Last year we had the CRIBS which was a concert to raise funds for the orphaned babies. This year, instead of making music, we wanted to toil with our hands. So we thought why not Habitat, you know make houses and stuff. Sounds fun right? Of course the actual thing meant hard labor and maybe it was the grunt work or to be able to finally sweat out the excess pounds but it was something I wanted to do.

A date was finally set. 30 pairs of hand were needed but not for Habitat, for Gawad Kalinga’s community project in the heart of Parañaque. We were supposed to bend and tie wires, reinforce bars using wires and teach 50 kids. Unfortunately, van came too late, traffic caused us to be later so we arrived too late for the kids’ class. Orientation began as soon as everyone got settled inside the room.

Then we were off. A handful went up to the classroom while the rest went towards the construction site. Sacks filled halfway with gravel and sand were passed from the ground to the second floor which proved challenging since there was only a stack of hollow blocks to step on. Girls carry heavy sacks from where they were stored, passed it on to Mandy who handed it over to Allen. Two pairs of hands lifted it from where his outstretched hands ended and a bayanihan of sorts took place for several minutes. The other boys mixed cement for a while. Unfortunately, there was nothing left to do after that so we went down and found hollow blocks to carry from one spot to the other.

We felt we could have done more. The wires needing bending looked particularly interesting just about then when the hands got numb from the lifting and the knees wobbled under the weight of the sacks filled with gravel. The momentum has passed and the lack of sleep made us feel lethargic and out of it, more and more just took the time to cool off.  I felt guiltier as the food served were really delicious and non-stop. We ate more and rested more than sweat it out in the construction site. So really hats off to the masons and carpenters who spent endless hours just putting together houses regardless of the weather. My back was already giving me a problem when I have not spent 30 minutes shoveling over the sand dune. My head was throbbing even when I was not out in the sun for an hour. But I did not complain because I wanted to do more, yet I cannot ignore my body’s aches and pains so less than two hours of toiling, I gave up.

I want to come back, maybe better to do so if coming from a rest day so as to have more energy to put into the grunt work that I was looking forward to doing in the first place. But if I cannot get the chance to do so, there are other ways I can help out. 😀

Yeah now we are one of those who go to malls with an SLR hanging on their necks. Yeah, we are one of those whose baby is this chocolatey goodness by Canon.  This baby is said to be the right one for beginners as it is not only lightweight but feature packed.

Though we could have been turned off by the pouting sales person named Kay at the Canon branch in SM North Annex, this mouth watering small bundle of wonders convinced us that it is time to be part of the burgeoning population of ((“feeling“)) photographers. Mama wanted a video camcorder but we told her an SLR is more  practical since it has a video recording function plus takes (well if you have the eye for it) wonderful photos. Needless to say,  Max came into our lives last August 13, 2011 without further convincing.

After a long time of not seeing nor communicating with one another, a former neighbor from San Juan exchanged chats with me thru Facebook. Without having the usual niceties first or whatsoever he just went directly to how many children do I have now. Not exactly cut off guard since as Filipinos this question goes hand in hand with the “are you married?’ missiles, I said none. He followed this up with if I am married question. I replied no.

The monosyllable answers should have given him pause that his questions were not welcome, unfortunately sensitivity was not his strong suit. He persisted in asking why and pointed out that maybe I am choosy with men.

So for those of you in the same situation and would often get the “there, there he will come. Just be patient” speech soon after, the usual reaction would be to silently seethe in anger, smile and bear it. However, there is something utterly unnerving about this comment that I stopped replying monosyllabic words. Maybe it was time for war because honestly comments like “why are you not married yet” with an accompanying pity look do not make a husband material appear out of the blue. It is also very insulting to someone who went thru a very bad relationship spill to hear the silent tsk tsk thus I replied sardonically that in order for one to be choosy, there ought to be more than a couple to choose from. If there is a non-existing person behind door A to begin with I should not be accused of being choosy.

Yes I am no longer young, yes I should be married at my age, yes I should have already given birth to at least one child but fate does not have that laid out in the open for me. I cannot just grab the nearest Tom, Dick or Harry that crosses my path just so I can have someone as my husband. Marriage does not work like that. Relationship does not begin like that. Courtship also does not happen just because boy meets girl. What if boy likes boy or girl likes girl? What if boy likes another girl or boy just wants to be friends with girl.? These things happen because they are meant to not because other people think someone they know should already be in a certain status.

Maybe the people who ask questions like the ones cited above think doing so make me or someone like me feel they care about my welfare. Sadly because of questions like  “when are you getting married” or “why not just get married” you make it seem that being single is such a embarrassing status to be in. You also do not know the burden you unintentionally load unto the people you direct these lethal questions at. It is hard enough as it is to find someone they at least like like, it adds a hard kick in the groin when a busy body thinks they know better. <End chat>

Giving up the badtitude…

Posted: August 4, 2011 in My World in 4D

For some reason which cannot be blamed on the weather or lack of sleep, I have become such a she devil. I need to reign in whatever it is that possesses me to just shout out loud and hurt everybody who is in the way. It seemed my thoughts would automatically just come out of my mouth and before I can think or edit the thoughts, I have managed to annihilate the people in my path.

So I pledge to shut my trap and fight off the evil within which forces me to speak out what’s in my mind. The people I hurt did not deserve the pain I inflicted on them. They are victims of the vileness of my person. I feel bad now after spewing such nasty remarks. It was not only mindless but also very insensitive.

I may be a bitch but still it does not give me the right alienating others thru snarky, thoughtless statements. My boss was right there is a thing such as too much bite…got to get rid of this badtitude right now. Say goodbye bitch!

They say as people age, gaining weight is inevitable so more and more people are resigned to the fact that their midsections will get bigger as they add on years. Not knowing that excessive weight can be a symptom of a malfunctioning liver.

If you follow the liver cleanse program and liver cleanse diet, your metabolism will soon improve and you will soon shed off pounds. On the other hand, if you eat the wrong food your liver will make more fats and you will store more fat in the process.

How will you know if you need to do a liver cleanse? Check if you develop poor digestion, abdominal bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and flatulence. You can say that your liver is sending an SOS if your tongue feels thick and you have a bad breath. This may go hand in hand with headaches, allergic conditions, fatigue, lowered tolerance to alcohol and inability to tolerate fatty foods.

To save your liver, you may want to undergo a basic liver cleanse diet. Start off with eating foods that are still in the same condition as they were originally. The more alterations, additives and processing it goes through the worst for you and your liver. Eat foods that are naturally crunchy like fruits and uncooked vegetables.

Also it cannot be emphasized enough that fiber plays a pivotal role to the liver cleanse process. Once your liver gets rid of toxins it dumps these toxins in the digestive tract. If there is not enough fiber to carry them out of the body through bowel movement, the toxins will be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and the liver has to deal with them again. Fortify your food intake with fiber by eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables and using ground flax or psyllium seeds.

**Note that despite the merits of this liver cleansing,  you need to have your doctor check on you and be the one to advise you on the hows and whats if you wish to go on a liver cleansing since the data above was merely internet research hodge podge on the subject liver cleanse.**
